It was established as Regional Research Centre in 1971 and subsequently, it was known as Regional Research Institute from 1999, and National Dietetics Research Institute from 2010. The Institute was earlier located at Govt. Central Pharmacy near Ashoka Pillar, Jayanagar, Bengaluru and presently shifted to its own building  in S.N 12, Uttarahalli Manavarthe Kaval, Uttarahalli (Hobli), Bangalore South (Tq.)
